With „Shootin‘ Legends“ Muma Gallery presents a comprehensive retrospective of the portrait work of artist Berry Behrendt, who photographed many icons of the hip-hop, rap, and R&B scene in New York in the 2000s on behalf of international record labels and magazines.
The exhibition features expressive photographs of Missy Elliott, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Busta Rhymes, Xzibit, Ice Cube, The Roots and many other stars who not only provided the soundtrack for an entire generation, but also shaped the cultural identity of “urban music culture” worldwide. This exhibition takes us back to a time of change: the turn of the millennium marked not only hip-hop culture's breakthrough from a subculture phenomenon into the mainstream, but also the beginning of an era of profound change in the entertainment industry.
The emergence of digital media, digital file-sharing platforms, and later the first streaming platforms changed the way music and entertainment content was distributed and consumed—the digital revolution was advancing, and it also influenced the work of photographers.
The transition from analog film to digital technology opened up new possibilities, but at the same time challenged traditional ways of working. Berry Behrendt's pictures are not only portraits of stars, but also snapshots of a culture in transition: they show the energy, pride, and personality of a movement that took to the streets and then to the world stage of pop culture, and is now honored on the Walk of Fame.
Hip-Hop war und ist mehr als Musik – er ist Ausdruck von Diversität, Selbstbewusstsein, und Emanzipation; beeinflusst Mode, Design und Marketing und spiegelt das Lebensgefühl mehrerer Generationen der globalisierten Jugendkultur. Hip-Hop ist die prägendste Popkultur weltweit, und was einst als Protest begann, bestimmt heute Charts, Mode und Kunst der meisten Gesellschaften auf diesem Planeten.
Berry Behrendts Ausstellung lädt dazu ein, auf die Wurzeln dieser Erfolgsgeschichte zurückzublicken und den Menschen zu begegnen, die damals Geschichte schrieben – und es in vielerlei Hinsicht auch heute noch tun.
